READ Genesis 1v27, Matthew 5v13-16
So, Sally is training up as a chaplain! if you didn’t hear her journey, click on the link above, as it’s an interesting and inspiring story.
She starts by explaining what a chaplain is, by saying it’s effectively a pastor who has been dropped into a place that’s not a church. This could be a school, a hospital, a prison, a football club, the armed forces or even a shopping centre, a cafe or our wider families. It is someone who will show the care and compassion of Jesus in the heart of that situation. It is a fast expanding role in an uncertain, hurting world.
Sally went on to say chaplaincy is often more of a mindset than a position, which opens the roll up to each of us in the places we find ourselves in during our week.
The basis of chaplaincy is found in Genesis 1v27, recognising each person we meet is made in the image of God, regardless of age, ability or status. Also that the world will recognise God by our actions (Matt 5v13-16). These are huge challenges for each of us.
We can also demonstrate a chaplaincy mindset within the church, as we reach out lovingly through our sign, the Fringe Fest and Open House
FOR DISCUSSION
- What questions or thoughts do you have from the talk?
- Recognising chaplaincy is a mindset, where do you see yourself as a chaplain? Eg your workplace, your family, a local club? What does it look like for you to be God’s chaplain in that place?
- How can you be God’s chaplain in the church setting?
