Moving forwards with a heart of care and compassion

Date:

Speaker: Peter Herman (NYP)

READ John 2v1-7

Peter chose this passage, because it demonstrated that much of what Jesus did was not a planned event. He allowed himself to be interrupted by people because of his heart of compassion, something that can be an inspiration to us in our Christian walk.
Peter shared that it is care, compassion and conviction, not control that is key to allowing God to move through us. Read 1 Cor 13v1 to see what can happen when we don’t have care and compassion!
He shared that pushing too hard on a door (striving) can actually be counterproductive, when sometimes what we need to do is to prayerfully step back, allowing Jesus to gently push the door open. That is what it looks like to give Jesus the control. When Jesus does something through us like this, it can appear effortless!
Peter reminded that Jesus said, “My yoke is easy” (Matt 11v28-30). Serving Jesus is a delicate balance between striving and doing nothing.
He also shared that he meets a lot of young people who are praying desperate prayers and believes that when the cries meet our “Here I am Lord” prayers of availability, we will always see God move.

DISCUSSION

  1. We see God move when we do things out of a heart of compassion. Try looking this word up and also what happened when compassion was involved. Here’s a few for starters: Matthew 20:34; Mark 6v34; Luke 7:13
  2. Share times you have seen God move in a situation when you have stepped back and acted with care and compassion.
  3. Pray for the young people of our town to know our God of care and compassion
